Submission FAQs

who?

 

You must be enrolled as an undergraduate Chatham student to submit. We do not accept work from graduate students (they have their own literary magazine) or from alums.

 

what?

 

The Minor Bird accepts creative writing, literary criticism, and artwork. See the guidelines for each below.

where?

 

Email your writing submissions to ibaloch@chatham.edu. Please include in your subject line whether your submission is creative or critical.

 

Email your art submissions to amckenna@chatham.edu.

when?

 

Submissions are open from October 24th to January 14th at 11:55PM. 

Submission Guidelines

Literary Criticism 

 

  • Essays should be 5 – 15 double-spaced pages in length, Times New Roman 12pt. font, 1” margins

  • Limit of 1 submission per author

  • Original work with clear and concise writing, should present an insightful and meaningful thesis. Accepted essays will be organized meaningfully to best develop this thesis, presenting supporting arguments and reaching a satisfying conclusion. Essays should be a close analysis of a literary or cultural text (including novels, poetry, films, television, etc.)

  • Follow Modern Language Association style guidelines

  • Submit essays in a Microsoft Word document with a clear title to your essay. Your name should not appear anywhere in the document.

  • Should be emailed to ibaloch@chatham.edu with the subject line “Minor Bird Critical Submission”

Creative Writing

 

  • No more than 3 submissions per person! (Poetry, prose, or creative nonfiction)

  • Prose and Creative Nonfiction cannot exceed 8 pages double-spaced, Times New Roman, 12pt font

  • Submit all work in a single Microsoft Word document with titles or “Untitled” for each piece. Your name should not appear anywhere in the document.

  • Should be emailed to ibaloch@chatham.edu with the subject line “Minor Bird Creative Submission”

Art

 

  • No more than 5 submissions per person!

  • Submit all work as a 3" x 5" photograph with 300 dpi.

  • You MUST submit your work with a title.

  • We accept photography, painting, drawings, graphics, and sculptures.

  • Should be emailed to amckenna@chatham.edu with the subject line “Minor Bird Art Submission”

All submissions are evaluted anonymously.
